Swish those saris and salwars!

Not sure yet if this will be a useful site, but they do have some dialogue at IndusLadies in Sydney. The discovery of that forum has revived a question I've pondering since moving to Sydney.

A lot of South Asians migrating to Australia are doing so on the combined qualifications of husband + wife teams. This has resulted in a lot of South Asian women in the Australian workforce, and I was surprised to observe a phenomenon I thought was restricted to the US. I have yet to see an Indian/South Asian woman, in the Sydney CBD office bustle, dressed in anything other than 'western' officewear.

There aren't any flashes of salwars or saris glimpsed in the crowds. I'm surprised on two accounts. Firstly, in the US (I lived in the snowy and four-month-wintry New England area) the weather isn't very suitable for these outfits. However, that is not the case in most parts of Australia. A sari might be difficuly to handle, and I didn't see many of those amongst even the Bombay and Calcutta office workers on a not-so-recent return, but a salwar should be a fun work-wardrobe addition.

The second reason is a lot more subjective, and relies on overheard anecdotes from when my parents were working in London in the mid-80s. They were in the discovery phase and swapping 'new encounter' stories with their fellow Indian friends, and the stories that stuck were of the women who were asked by their British bosses to wear their saris to work. I've yet to decipher if this was a novelty factor (don't think so, there were plenty of Indians in the UK by then) and it wasn't company or industry specific (these were executives at investment banks and marketing firms).

It would be interesting to get some reactions as to whether you would you wear a salwar suit to work?

As this clip shows, it looks like 'western wear' is also being considered as the only acceptable wear for airlines staff, TV presenters, and other customer facing service representatives in India itself! - Mala
