Australia New Arrival Employment and Settling Questions
Hi,
First of all congratulations to you for maintaining such a wonderful site. I have been looking for these info for more than a month now but luckily i stumbled upon when it.
Let me introduce myself as Anshuman Roy, a J2EE professional from Bangalore. I have applied from my PR visa hopefully would get it by Sept 2008. I had a few basic queries for which I require your valuable suggestion.
(1) I have around 6 years of experience, so looking into the salary figures what according to you would be a decent salary per annum in Java, J2ee. I have done 3 certifications 2 from sun(SCJP and SCDJWS) and 1 from Chordiant.
(2) I am yet to decide as to where to stay, for me I think Sydney would be the safest bet, while my wife thinks Melbourne. Any further suggestions?
(3) What are the possibilities of getting a job(in Australia) from here in India? Do recruiters conducts such kind of telephonic interviews? I was also thinking whether it would be a good idea to leave my job here in india and look for job in Australia once I reach there.
Would appreciate if any body could guide me in this?
regards,
Anshuman

Hello Anshuman!
What a timely comment. This site needs a bit of dusting off, and I was wondering whether I should give it some much needed TLC or retire it. If its still useful to folks, then hopefully its worth the effort to keep it going :)
You have some really specific questions, but I'll try and repond fully:
- Rough results from http://seek.com.au (disclaimer - most of these are posted by recruitment companies, who seem to be non-value-add necessity in the Aussie job market):
-- search for 'j2ee' --> 1820 matches (1000 in Sydney, 392 in Melbourne, rest elsewhere). Result: Sydney has a stronger J2EE market?
-- 1st page results' salaries seem to range from $70K - $110K (I would think 6+ years experience would command something in the high/higher range).
- Based on anecdotal evidence, I don't think many employers do phone interviews. So handing in your resignation and moving here is a bit of a risk.
- If you're ready to foot a possible return airfare, and will be granted 4 - 6 weeks leave, take a recce trip over and see what happens. (You could use the trip to also validate your visa.)
- If you apply for a government (State, citizenship usually required for Federal) job, be sure to read up on the application requirements, adhere to their specific application procedure, and give yourself a lot more time to wait for their response.
Most importantly, all the best with your PR application!
